Tuscaloosa Walgreens to Permanently Close As Brand Shutters Hundreds of Stores
A Walgreens pharmacy and store in Tuscaloosa will permanently close next month as the county's second-largest drugstore chain works to eliminate unprofitable locations across America.
USA Today reported last month that 500 Walgreens locations would close in 2024 as part of a broader plan to shutter about 1,200 by 2027. That represents more than 10 percent of their U.S. locations.
That effort is expected to ramp up this quarter, and on Monday, customers at the Tuscaloosa Walgreens at 4200 McFarland Boulevard East were notified that it would permanently close.

Despite its address, this is the Walgreens between the Fresh Value grocery store and Tuscaloosa Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Skyland Boulevard.
The pharmacy and convenience store are both slated for permanent closure at noon on March 25th, 2025.
A notice on the door said existing prescriptions would be moved to the Walgreens location at 8701 Highway 69 South.
The store is in District 7, where city councilman Cassius Lanier said there was nothing elected officials could do to save the store but conversations are already underway about how to improve that area of Skyland Boulevard.
"Walgreens has announced plans to close about 1,200 stores across the United States. By 2027, about one in seven Walgreens locations will close. The Skyland location will be one of these stores, unfortunately," Lanier told the Thread. "Nevertheless this entire complex has a redevelopment plan on the table as we speak. I won't stop pursuing a viable replacement for Walgreens to service the people in District 7, however this was out of our control."
