Low-Income Homeowners Can Apply for City-Funded Repair Program Starting July 20

Low-to-moderate-income homeowners in Tuscaloosa can apply for repair and renovation assistance through a city program opening applications later this month.

The City of Tuscaloosa's Office of Community and Neighborhood Services will accept applications for the Let's Paint Let's Renovate Program from July 20 through July 24.

The program, which launched in 2022, provides funding for repairs or improvements to permanent, owner-occupied residences and is funded through a Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

To be eligible, homeowners must live within Tuscaloosa city limits, be legal U.S. residents and legal owners of their property, occupy the home as their primary residence and be current on mortgage and tax payments. Total household income must fall below 80% of the Area Median Income of about $90,000, so at or below $72,240.

Active homeowners insurance is required, and renter-occupied properties do not qualify.

Eligible projects must address at least one of a home's major systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural or accessibility improvements.
Additional requirements include enrollment in or completion of a HUD-certified Comprehensive Housing Counseling Program. Homeowners seeking to enroll can contact Latonya Braggs at 205-248-5080. Homes built before 1978 must also submit documentation of a prior lead-based paint inspection or abatement activity with the application.
