Wildlife Professionals Tracking First Black Bear Confirmed in Tuscaloosa
Wildlife experts are in West Alabama working to track what may be the first-ever black bear to be confirmed in the city of Tuscaloosa.
City Council President Kip Tyner shared the news on social media late Friday night and said a black bear cub was spotted and caught on security cameras in the Oak Chase neighborhood in North Tuscaloosa before dawn that morning.
The upscale residential neighborhood is off McWright's Ferry Road not far from the eastern shore of Lake Tuscaloosa.
Tyner said the cub has not been seen since the morning, but that the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources told him this may be the first black bear to be confirmed in Tuscaloosa City limits.
North Tuscaloosa is represented by councilman Norman Crow, and Tyner said online that both men are confident that locating and safely removing the bear should be left the the professionals.
Tyner said wildlife experts are tracking the bear's footprints and people should just let them do their work - but to keep an extra eye on any outdoor pets if you live north of the river and near the Oak Chase neighborhood.
