New FAA Communications A Boost Tuscaloosa National
Last night, the Tuscaloosa City Council approved the installation of new FAA communication equipment at the Tuscaloosa National Airport tower. The upgrade is needed to support the future growth of the airport.
Viable and growing airports act as a magnet for time-sensitive industries such as Mercedes and other companies in Tuscaloosa County. Every growing, vibrant and economically successful community has at its core a viable airport.

Upgrading and maintaining Tuscaloosa National is critical in efforts to attract new businesses and industry and potentially to luring a passenger air carrier back to serve the area.
A first-class airport contributes to a community's quality of life by supporting emergency medical and healthcare services, law enforcement aviation, firefighting, pilot training and hundreds of private aircraft for each Alabama home football game.
Two major local goals are to enhance cargo service and return passenger service to the Tuscaloosa/Northport area.
Tuscaloosa National is one of the busiest airports in the southeast for general aviation servicing mostly the private/charter market, while commercial travelers head to Birmingham. Those lost passengers translate to lost revenue, inconvenience and more difficulty in luring potential employers. Plus, the convenience of commercial air service could help recruit students to UA who had rather fly in and out of T-Town that travel to Birmingham.
All of this is the reason Tuscaloosa National recently secured $8.5 million in federal funding for terminal improvements by Congressman Robert Aderholt. The airport terminal was built in 1971and needs modernization to transform the airport and make it attractive for commercial flights.
City officials are planning an additional $13 million investment, aiming to enhance passenger experience and attract commercial, regional airlines.
"The airport has undergone transformative improvements over the past five years," says Mayor Walt Maddox. "This investment ensures we can continue building a modern, connected future for West Alabama.”
Additional ongoing improvements include a 1,100 ft runway extension and taxiway work.
