West Alabama Democrat Congresswoman Terri Sewell (7th District) is chair of the New Democrat Coalition. It is putting forward an action plan to lower healthcare costs and expand medical access. In a capitol press conference Sewell described the Health Care Action Plan as offering 45 specific policy recommendations for what the coalition calls affordable, quality healthcare with predictable costs.

“The American people are facing a health care crisis of Republicans’ making. Costs are skyrocketing, rural hospitals are closing, and millions of Americans are being kicked off their health insurance so that billionaires can get new tax breaks,” said Sewell told reporters. “It does not have to be this way. As Chair of the New Dem Health Care Working Group, I am proud of the strong, commonsense framework that we are proposing. This plan addresses the Republican health care crisis head-on by lowering costs, expanding access to care, protecting rural hospitals, and strengthening the programs that Americans rely on. New Dems are committed to making health care affordable and accessible for every American.”

The plan's policy priorities are:

  1. Lower costs for working families,
  2. Close coverage gaps and expand access to care,
  3. Put patients over profits,
  4. Protect women's health for every generation,
  5. Encourage research and innovation, and
  6. Combat misinformation and protect public health.

Sewell believes the Democrat healthcare plan is simple and straightforward. In announcing the plan Wednesday, Sewell stated it will go a long way to ensure the nation's healthcare system will work for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected.
