A 40-year-old Talladega woman was killed and her passenger was injured Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident in Sumter County, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Troopers have confirmed.

Reginal King, a spokesperson for the Troopers in West Alabama, said Melvisha Hutchinson Mallory, 40, was driving a 1995 Ford Mustang on Alabama Highway 116 when the car left the road, struck a culvert and overturned.

Mallory was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 28-year-old Talladega man, was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

King said the fatal accident took place around Highway 116's Mile Marker 5, a few miles west of Gainesville, Alabama in Sumter County.

The exact circumstances of the accident are still under investigation, but King said State Troopers believe high speed was a factor.

No further details were available Sunday morning.
