The Tuscaloosa County School System (TCSS) has a new leader. Dr. Daniel Bray was appointed by the county school board at tonight's meeting. He replaces departed superintendent Dr. Keri Johnson who left Tuscaloosa County to become the superintendent for the Pelham City School System in Shelby County in August.

Dr. Bray has been serving as TCSS Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. He has served in this role since 2021. Prior to that, Dr. Bray served as principal of Brookwood High School, principal of Brookwood Middle School, assistant principal of Hale County High School, and served as a classroom teacher. Prior to his career in education, Dr. Bray worked in Financial Planning and Wealth Management, as a Certified Financial Manager and Investment Advisor. Dr. Bray holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Policy and Technology Studies; Master of Arts in Educational Leadership; Master of Consumer Sciences in Financial Planning; and Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration, Finance and Insurance, all from The University of Alabama.

“I am humbled by the confidence the Board has in me and honored to serve as the next Superintendent of the Tuscaloosa County School System,” Dr. Bray said in a press release posted on the school system's website.

“We were impressed with Dr. Bray’s vision for our school system and felt he was the right fit for the position,” Tuscaloosa County Board of Education President Mr. Bill Squires said while also voicing how impressed he was with all of the finalist interviewed for the position.

Dr. Bray has impressive leadership credentials as leader of the TCSS Aspiring Administrators Academy, a program to strengthen the leadership pipeline within the Tuscaloosa County School System.

Other finalists interviewed for superintendent were:

  • Dr. Lundy Brantley, a former Mississippi school superintendent and currently an education consultant.
  • Dr. Daniel Dickens, The current Principal at Holt High School.
  • Dr. Jeremy Madden, The current Principal at Northside High School, and
  • Allison Mays, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in the Tuscaloosa County School System.

Dan Butler, as served in the role of Interim Superintendent since September.

Dr. Bray will assume his new position tomorrow.
