Rural healthcare is in crisis in Alabama. Hospitals in smaller populated communities have closed due to financial and staffing issues. At least a dozen more are feeling the same pressures. But in Greensboro there is a bright shining rural healthcare star at the Hale County Hospital.

The hospital has been recognized for its commitment to healthcare excellence and community engagement by Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Alabama and The Caring Foundation. They have been selected as the recipient of the Diamond Impact Award - Tier One. The award highlights Hale County Hospital's newly launched "Fellowship Program", which focuses on leadership development and healthcare career development.

The Hale County Hospital was selected for the company's highest-level award over 82 applicants and 22 finalists for 2025. Six other winners were selected for Tier Two and Three.

"Hale County Hospital has been more than a healthcare facility for Greensboro and the area," Jada Willams, Hale County Hospital Track Fellow. "It is truly a lifeline to the community."

Williams points out the hospital is on the frontline for critical healthcare for a population that is aging and experiences considerable health challenges. She says these residents would find it difficult to travel to distance healthcare facilities if the Hale County Hospital were not there. This makes it ever more important to encourage young people to consider a healthcare profession.

The Diamond Impact Award supports innovative projects aimed at improving healthcare quality and community engagement across the state. The monetary award that goes with the selection helps Hale County provide CLIMB Academy (Community Leaders in Medicine & Beyond) students with opportunities to engage in mentored hands-on service and experiential learning activities including:

  • Volunteering at local nursing homes,
  • Shadowing hospital departments and staff,
  •  Assisting with Project Horseshoe Farm’s after-school program for elementary students, and
  • Touring surrounding universities and businesses

The academy focus is designed to give high school students hands-on experience in the healthcare field and prepare them for future careers.

Williams called the award a boost to continuing to expand the Hale County Health Authority's mission and programs in education and community-based healthcare throughout the rural community.

Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Alabama says the award, "...pours back into local wellness initiatives. These Alabama healthcare organizations, and countless others, promote healthier communities across the state."
