One person was killed and another injured after a shooting in Northport Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation is in its early stages, but right now police believe gunfire erupted between two vehicles on Highway 82 in Northport late Tuesday afternoon.

Keith Carpenter, the assistant chief of the Northport Police Department, said early reports indicate at least one gunman opened fire on another vehicle around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Both vehicles then left the scene of the crime before police arrived, he said.

The afternoon shooting took place on McFarland Boulevard not far from the Wendy's and Publix Super Market just off Highway 69.

As investigators with the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit were en route to the scene at Wendy's, they were called to a second location on Fieldcrest Drive off Watermelon Road in Northport.

One person was dead at that scene, and a second victim suffered injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening at this time,

Although the investigation is still in its early stages, police believe the two incidents are related.

UPDATE: The victim killed Tuesday afternoon has been identified as a 16-year-old girl, and a 19-year-old has been charged with capital murder for the killing.
