Police Charge Northport Man with Rape, Say He May Have Had Other Victims
Police have charged a 27-year-old Northport man with the rape of a woman he was acquainted with, and investigators are encouraging any other potential victims to come forward.
Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, explained in a Friday press release that they have a designated unit of professional sexual assault investigators who are assigned most crimes of that nature in the county.
Kennedy said that based on that unit's work, 27-year-old Dewyane Anthony Moore was arrested and charged with first-degree rape Tuesday. He is currently being held with no bond, pending judicial review.
No specific details about the incident were released to protect the victim's privacy, but Kennedy said she was an acquaintance of the suspect, Moore, and it took a great deal of courage for her to come forward.
"The investigation is ongoing, and it is believed that Moore may have committed similar offenses against other women in the past," Kennedy said. "The VCU has a specialized unit of dedicated and professional sexual assault investigators that can work with victims closely. We encourage anyone else that may have been a victim of Moore, to please contact the Violent Crimes Unit at 205-464-8692."
