Northport is putting $5,000 toward fixing up the baseball field at Echols Middle School, and the councilwoman behind the donation says the school needs about $9,000 more to finish the job.

Jaime Conger, who represents District 3 on the Northport City Council, presented the check on behalf of the city Friday morning. She said the field needs roughly $14,000 in repairs.

Echols is part of the Tuscaloosa County School System, but the city has no school system, and Conger said she wanted to use her office to help, and impact more than just Northside and Tuscaloosa County High Schools.

"While, as a City Councilman, I cannot control the brick and mortar of our county schools, it is my goal to help with projects like this to support our students and their families," Conger wrote.

"My focus since taking office has been trying to determine the needs of the elementary and middle schools that my residents attend and to help where I can," Conger told the Thread. "While we all strongly support our high school, sometimes the lower schools don't garner as much focus, and my hope was to help with that. The City wants to support our students at every level as best we can even though we do not have control over the facilities themselves."

Conger said anyone who wants to contribute to the remaining balance should contact Coach Kosloff at Echols Middle School.
