Development of a new sit-down steakhouse in Northport may begin as soon as this week, Mayor John Hinton told the city council on Monday.

Diamond Jim's & Mrs. Donna's steakhouse on Highway 28 in Livingston is beloved across Alabama, and elected leaders have long been vying to draw them to Northport.

In October 2023, the city council unanimously approved a $500,000 tax incentive to draw the steakhouse to the city which will see the steakhouse built on vacant land near the new Los Tarascos on Highway 43 north of City Hall. Little has been said about the project since then.

On Monday night, Mayor John Hinton gave an update and said the work should begin soon on the incentivized restaurant.

"Last Saturday, my wife and I went to Diamond Jim's in Livingston - it was her birthday, so we had a good steak dinner," Mayor Hinton said. "While there, I talked to Mr. Jim about the interest of Northport residents in the Diamond Jim's steakhouse planned here in the city and he said he'd talked with his son just recently about this and they plan to begin the development this week or very soon."

Hinton said elected officials often hear from constituents who want more locally-owned, high-end places to eat in Northport and that Diamond Jim's will be a major asset for the city.

"This will be a great addition in Northport for the many residents who have requested a good sit-down restaurant in the city," Hinton said. "Hopefully this will be coming very soon now."
