A U.S. Marshals task force officer was shot and a murder suspect was killed Tuesday morning while officers tried to serve an arrest warrant in Marengo County, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported Wednesday.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service. In a press release from Sergeant Reginal King, ALEA said SBI agents were called in around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

King said ALEA believes officers with the Marshals Service's Gulf Coast Regional Task Force went to the 100 block of Ruby Drive to arrest a man wanted for murder, and an officer was struck by gunfire when they arrived.

Task force officers returned fire and killed the suspect, identified by ALEA as 47-year-old Ernest Christopher Nathan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, ALEA said. The agency did not identify the officer or say which agency he works for.

ALEA said nothing further is available while the investigation continues. When it's finished, the findings go to the Marengo County District Attorney's Office.
