A man who was shot to death at an apartment complex in Tuscaloosa early Sunday morning had forced his way into a woman's residence during an argument, police said Monday.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said officers were called to the Links, an apartment and golf course combo off Highway 69 South, on reports of a shooting around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

The VCU took over the case, and Kennedy said their investigators spoke to witnesses whose accounts raise questions of self-defense.

"Witnesses on scene reported the deceased individual had been involved in a domestic argument with a female, had forcibly entered her apartment, and then began a physical altercation with a third party during which he was shot," Kennedy said.

Rather than arresting anyone at the scene on probable cause, Kennedy said the VCU will instead gather evidence and give it to the District Attorney's Office. They will present the case to a grand jury, which votes to either indict someone criminally or return a "no bill," ending the matter without charges.

The VCU did not release the identity of the man who was killed.
