A group of West Alabama's most generous philanthropists has named a financial advisor and his wife as their Family of the Year, the top honor given by the United Way of West Alabama’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society each year.

The United Way is a nonprofit that focuses on matters of education, income and healthcare for those in need, and each member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society donates $10,000 or more annually to the United Way.

This year, the ADT has honored Jenny and Jordan Plaster with their Family of the Year award, recognizing the couple's long-term commitment to improving West Alabama.

Jordan Plaster is a private wealth advisor and director at Plaster, Scarvey & Shumaker, and is known throughout the region for his involvement and service.

In a press release, the United Way said the Plasters met at a holiday party in Tuscaloosa where their chance encounter blossomed into a lifelong partnership built on love and shared values.

The Plasters raised a son, Harry, which led to years of coaching Little League baseball and supporting youth organizations and the UWWA said Jordan Plaster's own battles, particularly with hearing loss, both fueled an appreciation for and dedication to giving back to others.

After organizations like the Easter Seals helped him overcome significant challenges, he and Jenny became a "driving force" in multiple charity initiatives, including the Rotary Club, where they helped organize Honor Flights to Washington D.C. for veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

The UWWA said Plaster also helped push their own annual fundraising campaign beyond $4 million for the first time.

His better half has a passion for animal welfare, the UWWA said, and they extend their compassion to critters as well as their neighbors.

“Jenny and Jordan Plaster set the standard as community leaders and philanthropists,” said Jackie Wuska, UWWA President & CEO. “Their tireless dedication to improving the lives of others is a remarkable example for all of us. We are honored to recognize their outstanding contributions with the Family of the Year award.”
