Slight Risk of Severe Weather for Much of Alabama Thursday
2023 has kicked off a pretty active severe weather season for the Yellowhammer State. Currently, we are monitoring a system that will impact our coverage areas from Thursday morning into the afternoon.
Risk Level
The Storm Prediction Center has much of Alabama under a “Slight Risk” for severe storms which is a level 2 out of 5. The few areas not under the “Slight Risk” are under a “Marginal Risk” zone.
Timing
As the cold front enters Alabama it will usher in “scattered to widespread thunderstorms that will move quickly to the southeast along a frontal boundary Thursday,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
The overall timing for the entire weather system is from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. (That’s good to know if you are traveling on Thursday).
However, the timing of 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. is for the counties in our coverage area which are Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, and Walker.
Possible Threats
James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said that “isolated to scattered damaging winds will be the primary severe threat with this mainly linear convection. A brief tornado or two also appears possible with embedded circulations, but the overall threat is low."
"Rain amounts will be generally around 1/2 inch. Otherwise, the day will be mostly cloudy, mild, and windy with a high in the mid to upper 60s. Gradient winds (not related to thunderstorms) could gust to 35 mph at times," said Spann.
Our severe weather policy is to provide non-stop weather coverage if any of our counties in our coverage area go under a Tornado Warning. Our Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa radio stations are Praise 93.3, 92.9 WTUG, 95.3 The Bear, METV 97.5, Catfish 100.1, Tide 100.9, ALT 101.7, and 105.1 The Block.
