Alabama Freshman Safety Jireh Edwards to Undergo Surgery

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama freshman safety Jireh Edwards suffered an injury during Monday morning's practice, according to Yea Alabama, the Crimson Tide's NIL collective. Edwards will undergo surgery on Monday afternoon, although the injury is not considered "season-ending."

Edwards, a former five-star safety recruit from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was having a good fall camp for the Crimson Tide, earning praise from the coaching staff prior to his injury.

"Jireh’s one of the most instinctive playmakers I’ve ever seen coming out of high school. Very physical. He’s got phenomenal tracking of the ball," Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said earlier in fall camp. "His blitz IQ and awareness is really high, and so he can create production out of that package as well. Really, for him, it’s about putting the whole thing together. Jireh’s going to play for us, but how much does he play for us early in the season and in what situations? Those are the question marks we’ve really challenged him in like, can you put everything together that we can throw you out there on any given down? And he’s still working towards that.”

Edwards' injury is classified as a right arm injury, with no exact timetable set for his return to action for now.

Alabama will return to the practice field on Tuesday, August 25, for the 16th practice of fall camp 2026. Alabama is scheduled to open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
