The NFL career of former Alabama defensive lineman Christian Barmore has taken a detour due to a recent diagnosis. On Sunday, it was announced that Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots.

If he does return, there is no timetable for his return to play. There have been instances where blood clots end the career of athletes - notably, the Miami Heat's Chris Bosh dealt with the same issue. However, the Patriots do expect him to make a full recovery.

The Patriots drafted Barmore in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. He was the second Alabama player drafted by New England that year - the organization drafted Mac Jones in the first round.

Barmore has been in New England for three seasons and totaled 133 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, 32 quarterback hits, nine passes defended, and one forced fumble.

Barmore signed a major contract extension in April, with the deal coming in at four years and a maximum value of $92 million.

Barmore is one of two Alabama players on the Patriots. Anfernee Jennings re-signed with New England this offseason. Last season, New England also featured Mac Jones and Mack Wilson; Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason, and Wilson is now a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Barmore is one of four Alabama defensive linemen drafted since 2020. Byron Young (Raiders), Phil Mathis (Commanders), and Justin Eboigbe (Chargers) have all been drafted in the last four seasons.
