Ponder was first hired by Alabama in 2015, serving two years as the Crimson Tide's associate director of football operations. In February 2017, he was elevated to the director of football operations.

Ponder was the right-hand man for Nick Saban when serving as COO for Alabama football. Anything Saban needed, Ponder got the job.

Ponder even served as a stabilization when Saban stood on a Gatorade cooler to deliver a speech to his team.
