The Crimson Tide could get some help at inside linebacker next season, with Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack revealing Jefferson is pursuing a fifth year of eligibility following the NCAA's ruling in the case of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.

Tony Tsoukalas of Alabama Rivals reports that Alabama linebacker Justin Jefferson can potentially return to Alabama for the 2025 football season.

“We’re looking into those things right now,” Wommack said in a media appearance on Friday. “We’re really optimistic about J.J. coming back for next season. It’s something he wants to do, so hopefully we’ll have some confirmation on that here sooner than later. But it’s all looking like it’s in the right direction right now. I think it goes without saying how special that would be for our defense.”

The 6-foot-1, 228-pound linebacker started two games with 11 appearances for Alabama in 2024 and is fourth on the team in tackles with 51 on the season. Jefferson's return would be key for Alabama, with the Crimson Tide potentially losing Jihaad Campbell and Deontae Lawson to the NFL draft.

Alabama recently added another veteran body to its team, adding Nikhai Hill-Green from Colorado via the transfer portal. Hill-Green earned second-team All-Big 12 honors last season, finishing with 82 tackles, including 11.5 for a loss. He also recorded two sacks, two interceptions and four pass breakups.
