Gene Daniel Irvin (Daniel), age 58, peacefully passed away on Monday, August 15th, 2022 at his residence in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 18th at 3:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial on Watermelon Road. Bro. Craig Blair will be officiating, and Sunset Memorial will be directing. A visitation for family will be held at the Sunset Memorial chapel at 2:00 p.m.

Daniel is preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Smelley Irvin, and his grandparents: Nora Turner Smelley, and Flora and Andy Irvin.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Marcia Sermon Irvin of Tuscaloosa, AL; daughter Kerri Irvin (25) and son William Irvin (20), both of Tuscaloosa, AL.; his father: Daniel M. Irvin of Palmetto, AL and multiple aunts, uncles and cousins he loved dearly.

Daniel was born in Tuscaloosa, AL and graduated from Central High School in 1981. He enrolled at the University of Alabama where he completed his bachelor's degree in Geology and his master's degree in Geography. In his career, Daniel worked at Drummond Coal and for the University of Alabama's School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED). In 1990, Daniel began working at the Geological Survey of Alabama and worked happily at the Survey for more than 30+ years and retired May 1st, 2022 due to his declining health.

In his spare time, Daniel loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his family especially traveling with his children's travel ball teams. He also loved to watch college football, especially Alabama, his favorite team. Daniel also loved spending time at the beach, relaxing and eating great seafood.

Pallbearers will be Steven Jones, Lanier Jones, Chris Smelley, Mark Smelley, Michael Smelley, and Jeff Smelley.

Honorary pallbearers will be colleagues at the Geological Survey of Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of West Alabama because Daniel was an animal lover.
