Police are investigating after a decomposed body was found behind a Northport shopping center early Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for the Northport Police Department confirmed a body was found behind the Vestavia Center shops on McFarland Boulevard Wednesday and the case had been turned over to the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, which is standard protocol for any death outside a hospital setting in the county and does not necessarily indicate foul play.

VCU co-commander Marty Sellers said their investigators were called to the 200 block of McFarland Boulevard North Wednesday morning around 9 a.m. after the body was discovered.

Sellers said advanced decomposition has prevented the VCU from conclusively determining the person's identity but also said at this time, they have not found anything suspicious about the death
