South Sandy Wildfire 100% Contained near Duncanville
There are 62 non-controlled burn wildfires in Alabama this evening, eight of them are in West Alabama. However, one of the largest wildfires in the state is not on the Alabama Forestry Commission's map because it is a U.S. Forest Service (USFS) fire.
The South Sandy Wildfire, some four miles south of Duncanville, is 100% contained and held at 265 acres according to a press release from the U.S. Forest Service today. Forest Service fire crews have been mopping up and patrolling the fire line all day and will continue to monitor the fire until it is officially out.

The blaze near the Hale and Tuscaloosa County line forced a closure order for the South Sandy shooting range which will be remain in effect until 9:00am Thursday due to lingering smoke in the area. That residual smoke is expected to remain in the area of South Sandy Creek as well as Duncanville for the next few days, the USFS release advised.
"We’re grateful for the dedication of our fire staff who worked to contain the South Sandy wildfire as safely and quickly as possible," the press release stated.
Because of the spreading drought across West Alabama USFS has a HIGH Fire Danger Alert for Alabama's National Forests.
