More than $13 million in federal grants have been awarded to nine community organizations in Alabama by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The grants are to help Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the state during Fiscal Year 2027.

Alabama’s three VA medical centers in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Montgomery provide homelessness assistance through outreach teams, mental‑health services, and connections to emergency or transitional housing.

The VA has been successful in mounting a nationwide effort to care for homeless veterans, housing 51,936 homeless Veterans in Fiscal Year 2025. That is the highest number since the program began, with 49,462 permanent house placements in 2019.

Two major initiatives will be funded:

  • Resource and supportive services grants will be distributed through the agency’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF): focuses on rapid re-housing, preventing imminent home loss, and finding suitable, long-term housing solutions.
  • Funds for transitional housing and intensive supportive services will be distributed through the agency’s Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program: Backs transitional housing, service centers, transition-in-place assistance, and specialized support for women Veterans, frail or elderly Veterans, and those facing chronic mental illness.

“VA medical centers across Alabama remain committed to ensuring Veterans have access to safe, stable housing and the supportive services they need to thrive,” said Dr. Maisha Moore, Director of Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center stated in a press release. “These grants strengthen our partnerships with community organizations and help us reach Veterans where they are, providing resources that make a meaningful difference in their lives.”

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center's role in homeless vet assistance involves behavioral health and long-term care. The Tuscaloosa VA's expertise in mental health needs for homeless veterans is especially important.

All three VA medical centers in Alabama operate programs that directly help homeless veterans, and they do so through both VA‑run services and community partnerships.
