The University of Alabama and head coach Nate Oats confirms that sophomore guard Nimari Burnett suffered a knee injury that will force him to miss the 2021-22 season. The transfer from Texas Tech underwent surgery on Tuesday afternoon.

Dr. Lyle Cain of Andrews Sports Medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham performed the surgery and Burnett is expected to make a full recovery.

"We are certainly disappointed for Nimari and his family. Our program, his teammates and his family are going to support him throughout every step of the rehab process. Even though it’s a tough loss for us, I know Nimari’s work ethic combined with the fact he will be surrounded by the best of the best when it comes to our medical staff and team doctors gives me complete confidence that he will come back stronger and better than ever," said Oats.

Alabama sophomore guard Nimari Burnett has suffered a knee injury according to sources close to the Crimson Tide basketball program. While the extent of Burnett's injury is not yet fully known, the speculation is that his injury will require surgery and force him to miss the 2021 season.

Burnett, transferred to Tuscaloosa after spending less than a season in Lubbock playing basketball for Chris Beard at Texas Tech. Burnett opted to transfer out of Texas Tech after less than one season and pursue college basketball elsewhere. The Crimson Tide were one of the finalists for the 5-star guard out of Chicago and thus the Capstone became the logical choice for Burnett.

In limited action for the Red Raiders in 2020, Burnett averaged 5.8 points and nearly two rebounds per game as a freshman.

His addition in the 2021 offseason was one of the reasons that many Alabama fans were excited for the next season, he was one of three McDonald's All-Americans on the 2021 roster joining Jahvon Quinerly and JD Davison.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats has had bad luck with preseason injuries during his short tenure in charge of the Tide. His program has suffered preseason ACL injuries to James Rojas in 2019 and 2021, Juwan Gary in 2019 and an Achilles injury to Alex Tchikou in 2020.
