West Alabama Democrat Congresswoman Terri Sewell Refuses to Condemn Socialism
The Alabama Congressional Delegation's two Democrats are split on whether socialism is good or bad for our country. U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-2) voted for a resolution condemning socialism. West Alabama Democrat Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-7) cast her vote against it.
Every Republican in the house voted for the resolution introduced by Florida GOP Congresswoman Maria Salazar. 86 Democrats joined the Republican member's while 98 Democrats voted against it.

The resolution was sparked by the election of Democrat Socialist Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City. While the vote was being taken, Mamdani was meeting with President Trump at The White House. Trump has been extremely critical of the controversial new mayor who won with a massive vote from young New Yorkers who favor socialism. Trump characterized the meeting as a good one.
A Cato/YouGov survey conducted in March asked 2,000 American adults a range of questions about U.S. fiscal policy. The survey found that 62 percent of adults under age 30 expressed a favorable view of socialism, while just 38 percent held an unfavorable view.
When asked, “Do you have a favorable or unfavorable view of Communism?”, 34 percent of respondents aged 18–29 answered “favorable,” with 66 percent answering “unfavorable.” Only 14 percent of total respondents held a favorable view of communism.
Congressional Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), voted today to denounce socialism, whereas high profile figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) joined her far left colleagues in voting against the resolution.
According to an August Gallup Poll, Democrats and independents view capitalism less positively this year, each showing eight-percentage-point declines since 2021. For the first time, less than half of Democrats (42%) view capitalism positively, while a slight majority of independents (51%) still do. Republicans’ views are essentially unchanged, with three-quarters holding a positive opinion.
Americans overall continue to be skeptical of socialism, but Democrats are the growing exception.
