New Healthcare Sciences School Adds Board Members
Two prominent Tuscaloosa businessmen are among five additions to the Board of Directors of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences Foundation (ASHS) in Demopolis. According to a press release, the foundation, "Supports the mission of the ASHS by creating awareness, raising funds, and building institutional, business, educational and philanthropic partnerships that foster innovation in medical education and equity in Alabama healthcare. "
Larry Howell is the president of Hinton Lumber Products and a graduate of the University of Alabama. Howell also serves on the boards of Alabama Power, the Business Council of Alabama, and the Wildlife Federation, among others.
Howell is joined by Cade Warner on the board of the specialty school. Warner is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Westervelt Company in Tuscaloosa. Warner holds degrees from the University of Alabama and University of Georgia.
Other members are Clarence M. Ball, Jr. of Mobile, Nathaniel Drummond of Birmingham, Barbara Estep from Birmingham, Jeremy Wooten of Cullman, Bart McCorquodale of Jackson, Dr. Mark McIlwain of Sheffield.
Foundation President and CEO Scott Huffman praised the five selections, pointing out the foundation's role is, "...to bring together people who care deeply about Alabama's future and give them meaningful ways to make a difference." He pointed out that that the new board members have already accomplished that throughout their careers.
Officers elected to leadership positions at last week's board meeting included the re-election of Kirk Stephens as chair, Warner will serve as secretary-treasurer.
The tuition free, first-of-its-kind healthcare curriculum is intended to serve as a national model. It is recruiting students statewide. The school will be Alabama's fourth tuition free specialty residential high school in the state.
The specialty school for students considering careers in healthcare will welcome its first freshman class in August. Initial classes will be located at a mini campus on the grounds of the University of West Alabama in Livingston until permanent school now under in Demopolis is opened.
