A few months of relative calm have helped normalize the homicide rate in the Tuscaloosa area after 2022 got off to a worryingly violent start.

The multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit investigates all unnatural deaths that occur in Tuscaloosa County, and by the count of the Tuscaloosa Thread staff, they have opened investigations into 13 homicides so far this year.

For context, the VCU reported 23 homicides in 2021, 22 the year before and 21 each in 2019 and 2019.

Community leaders worried 2022 would prove to be the most violent in years after the VCU responded to six cases with eight individual victims killed in the first 90 days of the year, but the second quarter proved to be quieter in Tuscaloosa County. The VCU reported two homicides in April, two in May and only one in June.

Notably, no arrests have been made in four homicide cases the VCU investigated this year, although questions of self-defense may be at play in one or more of those incidents.

EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story errantly omitted the May double murder of a man and woman in Holt from this list. The gallery and statistics have been updated to appropriately include that case with the others, bringing the total number of VCU homicide cases this year to 13.
