Police in Tuscaloosa are investigating after a 19-year-old was found shot to death Thursday night at the Springhill apartment complex on 36th Avenue East, south of Skyland Boulevard.

In a Friday press conference, Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said officers were called to the apartment complex just after 9 p.m.

"TPD responded out there and discovered a subject deceased in his vehicle," Kennedy said. "He had obviously been struck by gunfire. The Violent Crimes Unit responded to that scene and that investigation is active as of now as a homicide."

Kennedy identified the victim as Omar Childers, a 19-year-old Tuscaloosa resident.

As of Friday morning, no suspects have been publicly identified in the killing and no arrests have been made.

Kennedy said the call at the apartments came in almost simultaneously as a domestic violence call that led to TPD officers killing a suspect in a gunfight Thursday night, but at this time the two cases are not believed to be connected.
